i wish i were in a tryptophan induced coma

it's thanksgiving and for the 8th year running i am not home for the holiday. my thanksgiving feast consisted of 3 (yes, three) plates of spaghetti. in straying from my habitual barilla red pesto sauce to save 2 and a half euros (american brands really do cost an arm and a leg in scandinavia) my dish did not have the usual savor i'm used to enjoying. but no mind, i was hungry. after pumping some serious iron at the gym i stopped at valintatalo to grab dessert: ben and jerrys new york super fudge chunk ice cream. i'm not even an ice cream aficionado, it's usually my last choice amongst treats. but i was going for the "i'm spending the holidays alone and therefore must be depressed and participating in emotional eating" sentiment. but i'm not depressed. and the ice cream was unsatisfying.

aside from candied yams and pumpkin pie, i am thankful for many things. it's a blessed life i lead. here are just some of the things i am thankful for on this day:

-family, obviously. i miss them and wish i were watching football and playing balderdash with them today.
-friends. we're spread all over the globe and many of you i don't get to see often. but i'm thankful for the times in which i do.
-health. i have a strong body and an immune system of steel. thank you, God.
-christmas. once again, thank you, God.
-modern technology. skype is the best thing to happen to this world since cherry pop-tarts. and i hugged my kindle before retiring to bed the other night. no, really. i hugged it.
-my in-apartment sauna
-chapstick
-james stewart (especially in 'the shop around the corner'. jimmy, i love you).
-my united states citizenship. even through all the economic difficulty and, well, obamanation we're experiencing currently, we really are a lucky bunch of people.
-fabric softener. it sounds stupid but i don't think i'd be half as happy as i am if my clothes didn't come out of the dryer smelling like a fresh spring morn.
-the atonement of jesus christ
-google
-not ever living in communist russia
-my aunt anna, who sent me pumpkin pie filling in the mail! thank you thank you thank you!! i love you!
-when harry met sally. our once-monthly dates never get old.
-DECEMBER 15th!! and ten days off for christmas
-fedex, packages, and mail in general

happy thanksgiving everyone!

I too am thankful for skype, which without, I would not have been able to see your beautiful face on thanksgiving day. Hard enough not having you here without being able to see that you really are ok. Thank the Lord for blessing people with the gift to create technology.
